BSC Virtual Tutoring
In order to set up Online Tutoring, you will need a computer with an internet connection and a microphone (most laptops have them built in). You will be able to contact BSC tutors during their regular tutoring hours through Microsoft Teams and your NDUS account.
How to access virtual tutoring using Microsoft Teams:
Go to "BismarckState.edu" as normal.
Inside the black bar on top, go to the “Resources for” tab, then click Current Students.
Scroll down the page to find Quick Links.
Click the green "Email" link.
Sign in with your NDUS account (if you aren't already signed in).
Click the red "All apps" button (if there is no “All apps” button, click on the icon in front of Office 365 in the left-hand corner of the screen).
Click on the purple "Teams" icon.
In the search bar at the top, type the name of the tutor with whom you want to work.
How to get the most out of your virtual tutoring session:
Be prepared. Test out your mic and speakers before you start.
Have your study materials ready. Tutors will have limited time to help you, since they will be jumping between different students. Do as much of your work before you talk to them as possible.
Don't run out of power. If you're using a laptop, plug it in before you start.
Use your tutor time wisely. When you're talking to a tutor, stay at the computer.
Be polite. Remember that anything you type in Teams will be saved to BSC servers.
Consider the space you're in. You might want to wear headphones. Let people around you know what you're doing so they can turn down music, etc.
Be aware of what is visible to the tutors when doing video sessions.
Go easy on yourself. As with any change, this will take some getting used to. Factor in a little extra time to get your assignments done. This will help you reduce your stress and get your homework done on time.
*You may be directed to additional resources by the tutors, such as Word (for shared document viewing). If you don't have a microphone or are in a situation where you can't play audio, you will need to use the Chat feature within Teams.
*Depending on the material you're working on, you might want to use a webcam to show the tutor the assignment.
If you have any questions, please contact
bsc.tutor@bismarckstate.edu
or call 701-224-5671.
IMPORTANT:
It is against the Academic Honor Code to ask for help with quizzes and exams. It is also against the Employee Code of Ethics Policy for any tutor to give assistance to students when they are taking quizzes or exams. This includes any
take-home
exams or quizzes.
PLEASE DO NOT ASK US TO HELP WHEN YOU ARE BEING TESTED! IT IS CONSIDERED CHEATING AND GOES AGAINST THE EMPLOYEE CODE OF ETHICS POLICY AND THE ACADEMIC HONOR CODE! *This can result in tutors losing their jobs and in students failing the exam.
