BYRON — The alarm was buzzing and the lights were blinking in the Byron Nuclear Generating Station simulation room Saturday.

It was a faux reactor trip, and dozens of Boy Scouts were there to learn how the plant staff would respond in such a crisis.

The room look liked something straight out of the Starship Enterprise, with control panels and buttons lining the walls. Scout leaders and station employees used scripted worst-case scenarios to show youngsters how employees would steer the behemoth back to safety.
