Personal Computer Suggested Specifications

Although there are computer labs on campus for instructional and lab use, students may wish to own or have access to a personal computer.  For many of the program courses, students can access full or academic versions of the software used in class for little to no cost from the software companies.  However, students should be aware that personal computers used for this purpose should have sufficient speed and storage capacity since the software used is very hardware intensive.  Recommended minimum computer hardware requirements for students using personal computers are as follows:

Hardware Specifications:
  • PC-based laptops only, no Macintosh systems
  • Processor: 2.5 GHz mobile minimum, 4 or more cores
  • Memory: 8 GB of system memory minimum (12 or 16 GB recommended)
  • Graphics Processor: DirectX 11 capable
  • Hard Drive: 500 GB minimum with 100 GB free for CAD software (SSD drive recommended)
  • Ability to connect to secondary monitor recommended
Software Specifications:
  • Operating System: Windows 10 (or newer if available)
  • Windows Office
    • Bismarck State College students who are enrolled for one or more credits can install Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus for FREE on their personal computers through Microsoft's Student Advantage Program. Visit our Microsoft Student Advantage Program page for more information and download.
  • Classroom Software: Information will be presented in class on how to access student versions of classroom software
