The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) is proud to work with the North Dakota National Guard and the Bismarck State College Embracity Diversity Team to host Bismarck’s Holocaust Remembrance Day Observance on Thursday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. in the Bavendick Stateroom, National Energy Center of Excellence at BSC.

This Holocaust Commemoration at BSC is in observance of Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day).

Charles Fodor, a Holocaust survivor originally from Budapest, Hungary, now residing in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will speak at the event. Charles Fodor was eight years old in 1944 when he and his grandmother were trying to find their way to an international safe house. As they ran along the promenade close to the Danube River, three women wearing the armband of the Arrow Cross ordered them into an apartment building. Suddenly, a man grabbed his grandmother and took her and Charles out to the street. He told them, “You don’t belong here, get lost.” It was later they learned that all those in that building were taken out and murdered on the banks of the Danube River.

“I have learned that life is most precious. Do a mitzvah each day to thank God for the gift of life,” said Charles Fodor.

Major General Alan S. Dohrmann, The Adjutant General, North Dakota National Guard; Dr. Larry C. Skogen, President, Bismarck State College; and Steve Hunegs, Executive Director, Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas, will also speak at the event.

“The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas is proud to support the Holocaust Commemoration at Bismarck State College. Bismarck State College is vital to educating North Dakotans about the lessons of the Shoah (Holocaust). We invite the Bismarck and surrounding communities to participate in this important Holocaust Commemoration,” added Steve Hunegs, Executive Director of the JCRC.
