Bismarck State College looks back at the 1960s with North Dakotans and others who took part in issues of the time during BSC's Nov. 4-5 symposium, "The ‘60s: Turmoil and Transformation."
The eight guest panelists will provide commentary after presentations from nationally acclaimed speakers on Vietnam and human rights/feminism. A third panel will discuss "The ‘60s on the Homefront: Zap, Woodstock, Protest and Vietnam."
"Homefront" panelists are
Mike Jacobs
, former editor and publisher of the Grand Forks Herald, and
Kevin Carvell
, former University of North Dakota (UND) journalism professor and district director for U.S Sen. Byron Dorgan. Both were editors of their respective college student newspapers during the late ‘60s - Jacobs at UND and Carvell at North Dakota State University. Jacobs stood in peace lines and attended teach-ins. Carvell is a U.S. Army veteran and former reporter and editor for The Forum.
They will be joined by
Tom Regan
, a media and marketing professional, who began working in radio in 1968 at a Top 40 station and attended the famous Woodstock music festival in 1969. The fourth panelist is
Al Jaeger
, North Dakota secretary of state. After graduating from college in 1966, he enlisted in the North Dakota National Guard and was among those deployed to the Zip to Zap (N.D.) riot in 1969.
Adding commentary to the taped interview of women's activist Gloria Steinem are
Dina Butcher, Laurel Reuter
and
Sheryl O'Donnell
. Butcher led the recent statewide campaign to defeat Measure #1 (personhood constitutional amendment and women's right to choose). She has extensive management experience in state government, including Human Rights Division director under former Gov. John Hoeven.
Laurel Reuter is founding director of the North Dakota Museum of Art at UND and chief curator. She has worked with women through the arts and is currently developing a Native arts collaboration on the Spirit Lake Reservation, where she was born and raised. Sheryl O'Donnell is professor of English at UND, where she specializes in women's studies, popular culture, and other genres.
Gary Skogen
, a Vietnam veteran, author, and former Los Angeles police professional, will share his comments after the Dr. Geoffrey Wawro presentation, "Vietnam 101: The War That Just Won't Go Away."
The BSC symposium website contains the three-day schedule, online registration link, Pay-per-view information, presenter biographies, and recommended books associated with the symposium. All information can be accessed at the
1960s website
. Symposium registration deadline is Oct. 28. For more information, call 701-224-5600 or 877-846-9387.
