The Gannon Gallery at Bismarck State College hosts an artist reception for Shane Balkowitsch of Bismarck Thursday, March 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the gallery.

Balkowitsch’s “Souls of Silver” exhibit of wet plate photography is displayed on second floor of Skogen Hall, BSC’s new library, English and art building at 1400 Schafer Street.

He will demonstrate the wet plate process by setting up his portable studio and making portraits of people at the reception.

“Wet plate photography relies on 160-year-old chemistry, a bit of magic and some luck,” Balkowitsch said. “I think it is important that as digital technology moves forward, we embrace, continue to celebrate and not forget processes of the past.”

Balkowitsch is self-taught and the only person pouring wet plates in North Dakota. He made his first plate in October 2012 after researching an intriguing image he found online. The wet plate image is produced using a wood box camera, glass surface, collodion and a silver nitrate solution.

Work includes images for the Custer House at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and a Native American series archived by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.

His studio, Nostalgic Glass, is housed in the Balkowitsch Enterprises building south of the Bismarck airport.
