While some think selfies are vain, two Bismarck State College students can say their selfies are profitable.

Earlier this fall, the BSC Bookstore participated in National Student Day, a day created by the National Association of College Stores (NACS) to celebrate students on college campuses. As part of the celebration, a nationwide hashtag contest on social media encouraged students to post a selfie in their campus bookstore and post it to Instagram or Twitter using #SMILEforNSD. For every selfie posted the student was entered in a contest to win $100 to their college bookstore and the NACS donated $1 to Scholarship America, a nonprofit with a mission to make postsecondary success possible for all through scholarships and other educational support.

From the hundreds of entries, 25 winners were chosen. Among the 2016 winners were two lucky BSC students – MiKayla Lennie and Molly Lodoen.

In addition to Lodoen and Lennie receiving spending money to stock up on Mystic gear, the BSC Bookstore also was awarded $100 for each winner to go towards next year’s National Student Day celebration expenses. This year’s National Student Day celebration activities at BSC included hourly in-store deals, free coffee in the morning and popcorn in the afternoon, a live radio broadcast on The Myx, and selfies in the photo booth with BSC mascot Mystic Ian.

“This is the first year BSC has participated in the national event and it brought lots of traffic. It’s all about celebrating our students,” said Deb Sandness, bookstore manager who looks forward to using the $200 from the contest to make next fall’s celebration even bigger.
