BSC energy students to compete in national and regional events

Twelve students enrolled in energy programs at Bismarck State College will take part in regional and national competitions this week.
Nine students in the Instrumentation & Control program will take part in the International Society of Automation (ISA) District VI regional competition, hosted at the BSC National Energy Center of Excellence on Friday.
The ISA competition allows students to compete with other students in technical/community colleges and universities in a six-state area in two categories – an analog competition and a discrete competition. Last year’s competition was held in Illinois and the BSC team took first place.
Three students, all graduating from the Process Technology program this spring, will travel to Houston, Texas, to compete in the 2017 Process Troubleshooting Skills in Energy (PTSE) competition. Adam Goroski (Mandan, N.D.), Mark Veverka (Dickinson, N.D.), and Paul Sorensen (Bismarck, N.D.) will face off against teams from colleges in Alaska, Louisiana, Mississippi, and more. The team is one of 32 teams from 15 colleges or universities that qualified to advance to the final round of the competition.
The goal of the PTSE competition is to increase students’ knowledge of and skills in troubleshooting methods and tools that result in safety, environmental, and efficiency improvements in operations, such as in petrochemical, refining, power generation, and more. A BSC team last qualified in 2013.
