The Bismarck State College BookTalk series begins Jan. 3 with a community discussion on “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien.

This first of three discussions on selected Sunday runs from 1 to 3 p.m. in the new BSC library at 1400 Schafer Street.

BookTalk at BSC will explore the theme, “War Stories: Vietnam,” with two more books, “Matterhorn” by Karl Marlantes on Feb. 7, and “Going After Cacciato” by Tim O’Brien on March 6.

The January selection is a collection of short stories about a platoon of American troops in the Vietnam War. It is semi-autobiographical and based upon O’Brien’s experiences with the 23rd Infantry Division.

Critically acclaimed, “The Things They Carried” is among the preeminent pieces of Vietnam War literature. It has received multiple awards such as France’s Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger Award and the Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize, as well as being a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award.

Books are available at local libraries and booksellers. Discussions are open to all. For more information, call 224-5450 or visit bismarckstate.edu/library.

The 16th annual series is funded by the BSC Library and a grant from the BSC Foundation.
