Bismarck State College Theatre opens its season Oct. 18-21 by re-telling the story of the original blood-sucking seducer, Count Dracula. Rich in both humor and horror, Steven Dietz’s adaption of “Dracula” runs Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium.
 
Dietz’s “Dracula” restores the suspense and seduction of Bram Stoker's 1897 classic novel to the stage and follows the original story with only a few altered details. As Count Dracula begins to exert his will upon the residents of London, they try to piece together the clues of his appearances—in a valiant attempt to save themselves from a hideous fate. The string of events is narrated by a mental patient who claims to have a special connection to Dracula.

While the movie “Twilight” and the “True Blood” series have romanticized fictional vampires and overwhelmed recent popular culture, this vampire is different.

“This Dracula is the iconic, mysterious, blood-sucking monster of your worst childhood nightmares: intelligent, seductive, violent, unstoppable. He’s everything you’ve ever feared made flesh,” says Danny Devlin, the production’s director and BSC assistant professor of theater.
 
“Dracula” cast members are BSC students are Nelson Abrego, Marissa Carpenter, Cullen Mitzel, Matt Masse, Trey Zent, Drew Pengilly, and Tess Griffen (all of Bismarck), Breanna Sailer (Hazen), Jacob Peterson (Grafton) and Elliot Hellman (Rockford, Minn.). Understudies are Kennedy Sundsbak (Hazen) and Naomi Chaffee (Bismarck).
 
Assisting Devlin is scenic/lighting designer and technical director Dean Bellin, stage manager Ambrosia Burke (Thompson) and assistant stage manager Maryn Cabinaw (Boise, Idaho).
 
Reserved seat tickets can be purchased in advance online at bsctheatre.com, by calling the box office at 224-5677 or visiting the BSC Campus Information Center in the Student Union on campus. Tickets also can be purchased on performance days at the box office in Schafer Hall.
 
With a PG13 rating, “Dracula” is recommended for middle school audiences and up.
