Andrew Miller, director of choral activities and assistant professor of music at Bismarck State College, was selected recently as Commissioned Composer by the North Dakota Music Teachers Association. His composition will premiere at the 2016 NDMTA annual conference in Bismarck.

At BSC since 2010, Miller directs the BSC Concert Choir, Women's Ensemble and Chamber Singers. He teaches basic conducting, choral conducting, aural skills, choral arranging, composition, secondary choral music methods and music appreciation.

As an active member of the North Dakota American Choral Directors Association, Miller provides clinics and workshops for state and regional conferences and articles for the organization's magazine, The Chorister, as well as service on the board of directors.

Miller has taught all grade levels and has founded two professional vocal ensembles, From Age to Age in Minnesota and Inspiraré in Bismarck. He loves to write music, publishing 12 pieces to date. He won first place in the 2013 Edwin Fissinger National Choral Composition Contest with "The Tyger." The composition earned publication and will be performed by the Concordia College Choir of Moorhead, Minn., during its 2015 tour.

As North Dakota's Commissioned Composer for 2016, Miller could have a chance at another national award. The NDMTA and other state affiliates submit their state composer and composition to the Music Teachers National Association. Miller's piece may be selected for performance at the MTNA national conference in Baltimore, Md., in March 2017, when the winning composer will be recognized as MTNA Distinguished Composer of the Year.
