Robert Meland, BSC assistant professor of military science and captain in the North Dakota National Guard, placed in the top two-thirds of participants in the Iron Man Triathalon held Sept. 13 in Madison, Wis.

This was the first triathalon Meland has completed.

Organized by the World Triathalon Corporation, the event consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a 26.2-mile run, raced in that order and without a break.

Out of 3,000 participants, Meland achieved an overall rank of 1,898 with a swimming time of 1:38:32; a biking time of 7:59:13 and a running time of 5:11:09.

No stranger to competition, Meland has completed five full marathons, five half marathons and is a member of the U.S. National Guard Biathlon Team. He trained last year for a triathalon in Lake Tahoe, Calif., that was cancelled due to forest fires.
