Cotton Wood bluegrass band from Washburn hosts its 11th Blizzard Bluegrass weekend of concerts Jan. 15-16 with featured band Nightflyer.

The Ohio-based band takes the stage with opening act Cotton Wood at 7:30 p.m. both nights in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium at Bismarck State College. Tickets go on sale at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby.

Nightflyer is comprised of seasoned musicians who all sing and grew up in musical families. With each individual standing on his own, the band is greater than the sum of its parts.

Named for guitarist Tony Rice’s song and album of the same name, Nightflyer performs a blend of contemporary bluegrass with strong traditional roots, a little gospel and a touch of blues. Their latest release, “Rail, River & Road,” features the band’s distinctive sound in 13 “road” songs pitched with varied vocals and crisp instrumentation.

Members are Richard Propps, lead singer and guitarist; mandolinist and sometimes lead vocalist, Rick Hayes; Tony Kakaris, standup bass and lead vocals; Tim Jackson, dobro; and Ronnie Stewart, banjo and vocals.

Nightflyer offers a bluegrass technique workshop Saturday, Jan. 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. in BSC’s Leach Music Center 177, Schafer Hall. Classes include instruction in fiddle, guitar, mandolin, bass, dobro, banjo and a bluegrass song. Fee is $5 with no pre-registration.

The Blizzard Bluegrass weekend also includes a Nightflyer performance for 90 students at the Youth Correctional Center in Mandan.

General admission tickets are $15 and can be purchased in advance in Bismarck at Eckroth Music, String Bean, Jacobson Music, and Night Life Music; in Mandan at Cappuccino on Collins; in Washburn at Java Rose and Chase Drug, and in Center at Corner Express.
