BookTalk at BSC wraps up March 3

The last discussion in the "Off the Grid" BookTalk series at Bismarck State College takes place Sunday, March 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Library-English-Art building (LEA Hall) at 1400 Schafer Street. The final book in the series is “The Mosquito Coast: A Novel” by Paul Theroux.
Michael Tomanek, BSC associate professor of English, leads the discussion of this American Book Award nominee which was made into a movie of the same title in 1986, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.
Published in 1982, “The Mosquito Coast” is among Theroux's best-known works of fiction. Told from the point of view of a 13-year-old narrator, the story explores a family's exodus from Massachusetts to the jungles of Honduras under the domination of a manic and eccentric father – Allie Fox – who is determined to build a civilization better than the one they left. But Fox's utopian ideals are more easily imagined than realized, and his dark obsessions leads his family down an extremely dangerous path.
Theroux is an American travel writer and novelist. Among the numerous awards listed on his resume are the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction for “The Mosquito Coast” and the very first Maria Thomas Fiction Award for his collected works.
Books are available at local libraries and booksellers. Discussions are open to all. For more information, call 224-5450 or visit
