Six BSC employees receive excellence awards

Published: May 08 2015

Bismarck State College honored six employees with the Award of Excellence at the 8th annual BSC Celebration May 5. The award recognizes significant or meritorious performance in professional roles.

Faculty recipients were Joe Ellefson, associate professor of criminal justice, and Carmel Miller, associate professor of precision agriculture.

Ellefson's student nominator praised his unique style of teaching, saying it helped the student learn at a much faster pace than in other classes. Miller was cited for inventing a new curriculum for an emerging industry and creating high job market demand for students in her classes.

Chosen for a Staff Award of Excellence were Kay Schilla, a maintenance worker in the Jack Science Center, and Samantha Harris, former BSC admissions counselor.

Schilla takes great pains to maintain an environment conducive to student learning and employee productivity by tirelessly monitoring temperature, lighting, air quality and ambient noise. Harris was lauded for outstanding involvement in showcasing BSC to prospective students.

Part-time and Adjunct Faculty Awards of Excellence went to Michael Luger, faculty/Campus Information Center assistant, and Cathy Schuh, criminal justice lecturer. Luger's nominator said he seems to anticipate every need and provides reliable and personable help. Schuh was praised for her commitment to BSC and her students and sharing knowledge in a straight forward, yet professional, manner.

Recipients came from 41 nominations by students and BSC employees. Awardees were chosen by the BSC Foundation Programs Committee and representatives from faculty, staff and students. Full-time employees received a $1,000 cash gift from the Foundation and part-time employees received a $250 cash gift.
