Bismarck State College Theatre Arts opens its season Oct. 21-25 with a play that imagines what happens to famous comic strip kids when they become teen-agers.

In "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead," characters resembling the "Peanuts" gang face down core issues of identity in an edgy story that addresses teen rebellion, violence, drug use and angst of all kinds.

Shows are Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium.

Geared for mature audiences only, the irreverent play by Bert V. Royal is an unauthorized parody* that follows the gang through profane explorations of self, sexual identity and social hierarchy.

"This is a dark comedy with emphasis on the comedy," said Danny Devlin, BSC's new theater director. "There is a wide range of feeling, including depression but a lot of heart. In the end, characters find wisdom in living their own lives and making room for others to live theirs."

New York Magazine said in a review, "The characters, teenage and reckless, are both genuinely sympathetic and unquestionably cruel. Growing more hysterical and more harrowing as it flows to an inevitable, uncomfortable end, this taut comedy manages to make tired clichés about stoners and popular homecoming airheads funny and endearing."

Cast members are Robert Day (Mandan) as CB, Shaina Hovrud (Mandan) as CB's Sister, Nick Van Sickle (Bismarck) as Matt, Adam Michal (Roseau, Minn.) as Beethoven, Alexis Larson (Carrington) as Tricia, Michael Bercier (Bismarck) as Van, Aeryn Mehlhoff (Bismarck) as Van's Sister, and Alicia Billock (Mott) as Marcy.

Assisting Devlin is designer and technical director Dean Bellin, assistant professor of technical theater, and student stage manager Carly Willoughby (Bismarck).

Reserved seat tickets at $10 ($3 with BSC ID) can be purchased in advance by calling the box office at 224-5677 or visiting the BSC Campus Information Center. Tickets also can be purchased on performance days at the Schafer Hall box office.

In 2004 "Dog Sees God" was one of the breakout hits at the New York International Fringe Festival, winning the Excellence Award for Best Overall Production, as well as Theatermania's Play Award of 2004, the GLAAD Media Award for Best Off-Off-Broadway production, Broadway.com's 2006 Audience Award for Favorite Off-Broadway Production and the 2006 HX Award for Best Play.
