A public recognition event to honor former Bismarck State College coach and math instructor Paul Swanson is set for Thursday, July 9, on campus.

The Bismarck State College Foundation and the BSC National Alumni Association host the event, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Bavendick Stateroom of the National Energy Center of Excellence.

Inducted into BSC's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, Paul Swanson was a coach, math instructor and mathematics and engineering department chair at BJC/BSC from 1956-87. Swanson became the Mystics' head football coach in 1956. He also coached the men's basketball team from 1958-60 and was an assistant coach under Bruce Meland for 12 seasons. Swanson also coached Bismarck High School basketball, taking the team to Top 10 state competition six of his eight years there. He later taught part time at University of Mary and the state Department of Public Instruction.

The evening includes a program honoring Swenson and a cash bar and hors d'oeurves. Tickets are $25 per person. Proceeds go to the Paul Swanson Scholarship endowment fund.
