BSC jazz concert Nov. 24 features three groups

The Bismarck State College jazz concert on Nov. 24 offers some of the best music from Count Basie, Benny Goodman and other jazz greats plus The Beatles and R&B soul band, Tower of Power.
 
BSC’s Jazz Ensemble and the BSC Jazz Combo share the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium stage with Bismarck High’s Jazz Too, a guest group from Bismarck High School. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is presented at no charge.
 
Rob Peske leads the BSC Jazz Ensemble in Goodman’s “Sing, Sing, Sing,” Tower of Power’s high-charting “What Is Hip?” and a couple Latin pieces and student vocals. Andrew Wickenheiser solos on “The Best Is Yet to Come,” made famous by Frank Sinatra, and Marcie Woehl of Mandan sings the emblematic “Georgia on My Mind” by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell.
 
The BSC Jazz Combo, led by Mike Langer, plays Brittany Howard’s “Gimme All Your Love” and a Beatles medley arranged by members of the combo.
 
Bismarck High School musicians perform Duke Ellington’s classic “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” a Basie number, and Melissa Manchester’s “Come in from the Rain.” The group is directed by Melinda Halverson.
 
The concert concludes with all groups combining for a fun rock tune by Jeff Jarvis called “White Heat.”
