The stage is set for Shortcuts, a real-time design battle showcasing creative skills pitting faculty against students and agencies against industry. While the hope is that things don’t get physical, spectators will have the chance to cheer on their favorite designer on Monday, April 24 in a live, fast-paced design battle where only the strongest survive.

Shortcuts gives the audience a sneak peak of the creative process designers use while quickly solving problems using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign software.

Like any true fight, Shortcuts is comprised of three rounds. Battles will be moderated and color commentary will be provided by veteran creatives Jeff Eslinger (North Dakota Association of Counties) and Tait Sundstrom (Sund Design).

In the first 30-minute round, BSC faculty Sean Thorenson, Tom Marple and Jason Lueder will tackle students QuinnLyn Nelson, Brandon Enders and Dani Monzelowsky in a Photoshop challenge, combining required text and images to create a final masterpiece. Next, two illustrators Ben Brick (Agency MABU) and Tyler Huber (MDU Resources) will go head to head in another 30-minute round to create an icon that relates to a provided creative brief. The final 60-minute round consists of two design teams, Lisa Petersen (Image Printing) and Nathan Engel (KK Bold) vs. Doug Yellow Bird (Vintage Guitar) and Michelle Keller (United Printing) fighting for supreme creative dominance in a final Photoshop battle.

Battles begin at 7 p.m. in the BSC National Energy Center of Excellence Bavendick Stateroom. Admission is free and concessions will be sold with proceeds benefitting the BSC Graphic Design and Communications student club. Lighting and special effects will be provided by Method Entertainment and video by BSC Mystic Media students.

This design experience is more than just graphic design; it is a combination of art, networking, community and of course, epic creative battles. No one will be saved by the bell on this night. Check out the designer/fighter profiles on Facebook prior to placing your bets!
