BSC recognizes oustanding student achievements

Bismarck State College recently celebrated its scholars and outstanding students at the 48th annual Student Recognition Ceremony in the Bavendick Stateroom of the BSC National Energy Center of Excellence.

This year 141 students were recognized for being nominated for Phi Theta Kappa membership. Students nominated for Phi Theta Kappa membership maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or better and completed 15 semester hours of associate degree work in residence at BSC. They received a certificate and a paid induction fee into this international, two-year college honor society.

Two BSC students were recognized as being named Phi Beta Lambda Chapter National Qualifiers and two students were recognized as being chosen Phi Beta Lambda Chapter Who's Who. Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) is the collegiate division of the national association, Future Business Leaders of America. The purpose of the BSC PBL chapter includes leadership, strengthening confidence, developing good working relationships within the community and encouraging community service. Students who qualify for the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference through state competition receive a certificate and a paid membership fee.

During the ceremony, 74 students were recognized as Outstanding Academic Students in their area of study. BSC faculty selected the Outstanding Student recipients in their area based on academic performance, achievement, character, leadership and contribution to the college. Those selected as Outstanding Student received certificates and a $50 cash award from the BSC Foundation.

This year 11 students were recognized for their outstanding involvement in Bismarck State College Student Government (SGA). SGA members provide leadership, promote student concerns, plan activities, participate in community service projects, and represent BSC at state and national student association meetings.

BSC also recognized 7 students as being named to Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges. Recipients of the Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges designation were selected by representatives of the BSC Faculty Senate and the BSC Staff Senate on the basis of academic achievement, community service, leadership in extracurricular activities and future potential. They will be listed in the national "Who's Who" volume.

Two students were recognized for being one of 12 North Dakota community college students named to the 2017 All-North Dakota Academic Team and All-USA Academic Teams, which recognizes the academic achievements of community college students. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community. Each member of the North Dakota team receives a certificate of congratulations from Gov. Doug Burgum, an award certificate, a medallion and a monetary award. Team members are also eligible for scholarships from Dickinson State University, Mayville State University, Minot State University, Valley City State University, North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota.
