Bismarck State College (BSC) Theatre presents "The AI Plays," a collection of short plays and monologues that explore the intricate relationship between humanity, technology and the future of artificial intelligence (AI). The plays were written entirely using ChatGPT.

Set for Dec. 7-10, performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium on the BSC campus.

"The AI Plays" features a lineup of eight short plays and eight monologues, created with input from BSC student actors. From the students’ unique ideas, AI generated the raw, unedited content for the scripts.

"What it gave us is what we're performing. There was no editing. This is the raw output. It's our job as actors and performers to bring the humanity,” says the production’s director and BSC associate professor of technical theatre Dean Bellin.

"The AI Plays" is a sample of the progress that artificial intelligence has made thus far and is set to take theatergoers on a journey through the evolving world of AI. This immersive production showcases the capabilities of AI-generated content, including the dialogues, soundscapes and projected imagery.

The performances will strike a balance between humor and seriousness. "When you tell ChatGPT to talk about the future, it loves to talk about toasters,” says Bellin.

More serious themes present various perspectives on the impact of technology, fostering an open dialogue on the subject. "We present all sides to the argument, with many scenes that are both pro and anti-technology – presenting as many viewpoints as possible," Bellin says.

This production is family-friendly and suitable for ages 10 and up. While a basic understanding of technology is helpful, the show is designed to appeal to anyone curious about where technology is leading us.
