Bismarck State College Associate Professor of Music Dawn Hagerott was named the 2020 Outstanding Teacher of the Year for Higher Education by the Bismarck Mandan Chamber of Commerce EDC this fall.

Hagerott has focused on vocal music and performing since she first joined BSC as a lecturer in 2004. In June 2009 she became an assistant professor of music, and in May 2014 an associate professor of music. Hagerott is the BSC voice instructor, teaches online music appreciation and coordinates the sophomore recitals for all BSC music majors. She is also the director of the BSC Men's Ensemble – the group widely known in the Bismarck-Mandan community for their annual Valentine serenades. Outside of BSC, Hagerott shares her passion with a much younger group of vocalists as the conductor of the Jubilate Children's Choir for the Central Dakota Children's Choir (CDCC) organization.

In her faculty bio Hagerott notes, “Each of us has the potential to be a great singer. We just need to learn the tools to do this. If you have a love for music, (whatever style of music it may be) and you enjoy singing, you owe it to yourself to discover the voice that lies within you. Singing is such a wonderful way in which you can express yourself. Singing is something you can take with you anywhere, do anytime, and continue to enjoy your entire life.

Hagerott earned bachelor degrees in elementary and secondary music education from the University of Idaho, and has a master’s degree in vocal performance from Northern Arizona University.

The chamber's Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award is an annual program in its 33rd year that encourages community members to nominate a teacher who has positively affected their life, or the lives of others, to receive the Crystal Apple. There are three categories – elementary, secondary and post-secondary education.
