Bismarck State College nursing faculty say that one of the major changes they are seeing in healthcare today are the different cultural experiences which can lead to barriers with a nurse who isn’t culturally competent. Since this can be difficult to implement in simulation, Nursing Program Director Annie Paulson reached out to Ryan Pitcher, BSC associate professor of Spanish, to collaborate for a simulation.

In a hospital room lab on the BSC Allied Health campus, Pitcher’s students play the roles of a Spanish speaking patient and a Spanish speaking family member and translator. Paulson’s nursing students play the roles of… nurses, of course. Read all about how the scenario plays out in this recent Bismarck Tribune feature.
