Trudy Riehl, associate professor and program director of surgical technology at Bismarck State College, was recently recognized as the recipient of the Fellow of the Association of Surgical Technologists (FAST) award. Riehl was honored at the opening ceremony of the 48th Annual Association of Surgical Technologists (AST) Surgical Technology Conference in New Orleans, La.

The FAST award is AST’s highest honor designed to give recognition to those who have significantly contributed to the profession of surgical technology as practitioners, educators, researchers and administrators. Recipients of the FAST award are recognized as having upheld the highest standards and traditions of the surgical technology profession, including their devotion to the advancement of the practice of surgical technology through volunteer professional and community activities.

Riehl has been an associate professor of surgical technology at BSC for 17 years. BSC students in the surgical technology program have achieved a 100 percent pass rate in the national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam for the past eight years. The CST designation is the foremost credential for surgical technologists in the nation and required for employment at many local, state and national health care organizations.
