BSC golf classic scheduled for June 19

Published: Jun 14 2015

Golfers have a chance to play plus raise money for Bismarck State College athletic scholarships during the BSC President's Cup Golf Classic Friday, June 19, at Prairie West Golf Course in Mandan.

Teams will play 18 holes in one of two formats and vie for prizes. The event includes putting and hole-in-one contests, free lunch, 19th Hole Social, and the BSC Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony. This year, BSC honors a coach and two basketball players.

Harold Hammeren coached BSC women's basketball from 1977-88 and led the 1977-78 team to BSC's first ever North Dakota Junior College state championship. A four-sport athlete at Dickinson State University, Hammeren earned 12 varsity letters and graduated in biology and physical education. He was inducted into the DSU Hall of Fame four times as Best Athlete of the Decade (1960-70) and as part of three teams. Hammeren taught in Richardton, N.D., coaching three sports for nine seasons, and at Bismarck High School, where he coached girls' basketball and boys' track and taught biology and physical education for 29 years.

Wylee Bearstail was a prolific scorer for Mystic basketball teams during the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons. He helped lead them to the Regional XIII and District 11 championships and a berth in the 2001 NJCAA National Tournament, where he received the Jack Cistriano Best Small Man MVP Award. Versatile and known for long-range shooting, he led the nation in scoring averaging 24.8 points his freshman year. He finished his career at BSC with 1,330 points in two seasons. Bearstail garnered NDJC, Region XIII and Mon-Dak All Conference First Team Honors in two seasons and was Region XIII MVP his sophomore year.

An outstanding scorer, Jolene Lockwood played the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. She helped lead the Mystics through Region XIII and District F championships to a berth in the 1998 NJCAA National Tournament, where the team finished in eighth place. Lockwood set a NJCAA tournament record for three-point shots made in a single tourney game. She nailed eight three-pointers while scoring 36 points in a consolation game victory 97-81 over Baltimore Community College. Lockwood was named to Mon-Dak Conference, NDJC All-State, and All-Region XIII teams her freshman and sophomore seasons.
