Bismarck State College ends this year’s Conversations at BSC series Sunday, June 5, with a discussion of “Custer and the Black Hills: The Thieves Trail.”

The conversation between BSC President Larry C. Skogen and humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson begins at 3 p.m. in the Bavendick Stateroom of the National Energy Center of Excellence.

This program involves the 1874 Black Hills Expedition led by Lt. Col. George A. Custer, as interpreted in Terry Mott’s new book, “Thieves Road: The Black Hills Betrayal and Custer’s Path to Little Big Horn.”

The expedition altered the lives of thousands of Americans after Custer’s confirmation of finding gold. It changed the direction of the country’s expansion, expedited construction of the Northern Pacific Railroad, spread war across the plains, and destroyed the way of life of the Sioux, Arapahoe, and Northern Cheyenne nations.

Skogen and Jenkinson will explore ways in which the expedition led to the debacle on the Little Big Horn in June 1876. They also will report on their fact-finding trip along the Custer trail to deepen their understanding of the 1874 journey, which involved more than 1,000 troops.

Programs are unrehearsed and emphasize the 360-degree perspective of the humanities lens. Live video/audio streaming is available at bismarckstate.edu/livestream/. Audio alone is available on The Myx at bscmyx.com. Funding is provided by Bismarck State College and the BSC Foundation.

Dates and topics for the ninth season of Conversations at BSC are set. Learn more by visiting the Conversations at BSC website.
