The 19th annual ArtsQuest at Bismarck State College is underway with the Collage Concert on April 12, and a public reception for Montana guest artist Steve Lillegard set for April 13.

Lillegard appears in a “Meet the Artist” event from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Schafer Hall lobby. The teaching artist and former BSC student appears in conjunction with his exhibit in Elsa Forde Gallery. Besides bronze sculpture, he also draws and paints.

Lillegard studied fine art at Montana State University in Bozeman before transferring to BSC to spend a year in graphic design. He took a job with Graphic Traffic in Bismarck creating print and sign promotions that included cartoon sculptures for specialty advertising. Lillegard was inspired to attempt bronze sculpture after attending a Bismarck art show.

On his return to Montana, he worked briefly in Dickinson and then set up Lillegard Studio & Foundry in Stanford in 1981. His bronze sculptures range in size from miniature to larger-than-life and sell worldwide. He strives for authenticity and specializes in historical research.

“I collected saddles over the years, and if I want to make a sculpture, I have the saddle for that period,” said Lillegard, who accesses guns, bridles and clothing, some of it custom-made. “A local museum also loans me things.”

During his two-day residency, Lillegard will present and teach in visual art and graphic design classes.

BSC’s popular Collage Concert on Tuesday, April 12, is a seamless performance that combines music, art and literature. The presentation starts at 7:30 p.m. in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium.

The program progresses without interruption as music mixes with visual art improvisation and student poetry readings from Figments of Imagination, BSC’s literary journal. As chamber music groups and soloists perform, art faculty create canvases inspired by what they hear, giving audience members an opportunity to watch an artwork develop.

Both events are presented at no charge during ArtsQuest, BSC’s month-long celebration of the arts. For more information, visit bismarckstate.edu/artsquest.
