The Bismarck State College Art program has clay available for the annual community raku firing on campus. The clay is free to the public.

Interested individuals can pick up clay at the ceramics studio in Skogen Hall starting March 22 to make a pot or small sculpture. Objects must be returned to BSC by April 23 for bisque firing. Unglazed pots will be provided for those who prefer not to make their own.

Held during ArtsQuest, community raku is a signature event of BSC’s month-long celebration of the arts.

The raku firing takes place May 1-3. Participants are invited to come during the firing days to glaze their pots and watch them transform. Everyone is welcome to watch and learn about the raku process.

Raku is an ancient firing process that originated in Japan and has been adapted to modern sensibilities. Viewers will enjoy the dramatic surface effects of the raku method, which involves heavy reduction and quick cooling.

Firing hours are May 1 from noon to 5 p.m., May 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and May 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. west of Skogen Hall.
