The Bismarck State College Visiting Writers Series hosts author readings Sunday, March 6, from a new anthology titled “Fracture: Essays, Poems, and Stories on Fracking in America.”

Four of the anthology’s 50 contributors will read, answer questions and sign books at 3 p.m. in Basin Electric Auditorium (304) of BSC’s National Energy Center of Excellence.

“Fracture” examines the impact of hydraulic fracturing on communities and landscapes across the United States. The BSC event is part of a five-stop book tour through North Dakota with four of anthology’s authors.

Debra Marquart and Taylor Brorby grew up in North Dakota. Both are associated with the Creative Writing & Environment master’s program at Iowa State University in Ames.

Marquart is professor of English in the Creative Writing & Environment program and senior editor of Flyaway: Journal of Writing and Environment. She has written five books, including “The Horizontal World,” a memoir about growing up in North Dakota.

Brorby, one of two anthology editors, is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at Iowa State. An award-winning essayist, poet and environmentalist, he writes a blog on education and environmentalism for The Huffington Post.

Alison Deming is a poet and non-fiction writer with numerous publications and awards. She teaches creative writing at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Kathryn Miles is a journalist, science writer, environmental theorist and faculty member in Chatham University’s MFA program in Pittsburgh. She is also writer-in-residence at Green Mountain College in Vermont.

The Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by the English discipline of the English and Mass Media Department. Programming has grant support from the BSC Foundation and North Dakota Humanities Council, a nonprofit, independent state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
