Vickie Volk, associate professor of computer support specialist, is the 2016 recipient of the $25,000 Jack Fellowship.

Volk will apply the award toward a doctoral degree in teaching and learning with an emphasis in higher education from the University of North Dakota. She’s currently writing her dissertation.

Volk earned her master’s degree from UND in 2010 and has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her studies.

After earning a business degree from the University of Idaho, Volk began teaching computer classes. She has taught office technology, computer and networking classes at BSC since 2001.

“It’s a field that constantly changes and I like that.”

Volk considers teaching to be its own reward.

“I love to share my knowledge. It’s so rewarding to run into a former student who tells me that they have a great job or that they use what I taught them on a daily basis. It’s gratifying to see them succeed.”

Student success is also the topic of her dissertation. She’s exploring how to help students have better experiences in online classroom environments.

Volk hopes to play out her career at BSC.

“I believe in lifelong learning and I feel fortunate to work in a place where that is supported and encouraged.”

The late Tom and Peg Jack, lead contributors to BSC’s Jack Science Center, endowed the Jack Fellowship in 1999 to fund sabbatical leave or further education for a BSC employee. A committee appointed by the BSC Foundation selects the recipients.
