The University of Nebraska has published Larry C. Skogen’s two-volume set To Educate American Indians: Selected Writings from the National Educational Association’s Department of Indian Education, 1900-1904 and 1905-1909. The first volume received the Western History Association’s 2025 Dwight L. Smith (ABC-CLIO) Award for “significant bibliography or research tool.” In this presentation, Dr. Skogen will share the research, writing and university publishing journeys that resulted in this two-volume set. Finally, he will provide an overview of lessons learned about the federal government’s motivation in developing an American Indian school system.
